How to Pick a Squirrel dog Puppy.

I've enjoyed breeding, training, and - best of all- hunting a number of different squirrel dogs it has provided me with experience on what canine traits insure success with squirrel dogs. How do I pick a puppy? I can assure you I put a lot less effort into this task now than I did in past years. For example, I think the best place to buy a squirrel dog puppy is where people hunt wild squirrels with their dogs. The two most important factors in picking the right puppy are the sire and the dam. If you can watch the parents of the litter hunt and they do a good job, you pretty much can't go wrong. In most cases this isn't very practical. There may not be a local breeder that breeds squirrel dogs, and litters don't always happen when you've decided the time is right for a new prospect at your house. So if you are like most of us and pick a pup over the Internet, phone, or newspaper, then I offer the following guideline in picking that squirrel dog puppy. After introducing yourself to the breeder, ask him if he hunts his dogs. If you are a hunter, you want a new puppy that comes from hunting dogs. Be very specific when asking what the breeder does with his dogs. Does he competition hunt, meat hunt, show on the bench or enter them in the treeing contest, or does he actually take his dogs to the woods and hunt squirrels? Once you've found the breeder with genuine hunting dogs, you are closer to finding the puppy in the litter most suitable for you. When looking for a future squirrel dog, I want to know if the parents are natural tree dogs and if the pups have been exposed to gun fire and if they have seen a squirrel and what there reactions to the gun and squirrel was. With the above said there is no way to pick the pick of the litter at 8 weeks old. If they come from decent parents then they should make a squirrel dog. Just look at the pups and see which you like personality and looks wise that’s all you can go on. You may walk away with the pick of the litter
