During the late 1990s, Billy Ainsworth of Magnolia, Arkansas and George Chisenhall of Elgin, South Carolina began a selective line breeding program that eventually led to the birth of the American Squirrel Dog. Through mixing of various Feist strains, Terriers, and Curs, they were able to develop a breed suited for the style in which they hunted. Appearance: American Squirrel Dogs stand 14-20 inches in height and weigh 20-30 lbs. The head is elongated with a skull that appears flat when viewed from the side. The American Squirrel Dog has a scissors bite. The eyes are round. Erect and tipped ears are most preferred although drop ears are also acceptable. The neck is strong and slightly arched. The back is straight. The ribs are deep and well sprung. The feet are cat like. A natural bobtail or a tail docked to 1-3 inches is preferable to a full-length tail. The coat is short and smooth. The American Squirrel dog may be wheaten, white, red or brindle; either with or without rust, black, tan, or brindle markings. Solid white and wheaten are the most preferred colors. Personality and Uses: As its name implies the American Squirrel Dog excels at hunting squirrels. It remains almost silent while tracking until it has treed its game. It gets along well with other dogs. The American Squirrel Dog is always on the move. The breed is said to require very little training, instead having an almost natural ability to hunt squirrels as well as a responsive nature. The breed is friendly towards people but at the same time protective of its family. George
